USING A FACEBOOK PAGE
TO PROMOTE A PRODUCT OR SERVICE



Both of my books (Viktor Frankl: A Life Worth Living, To Drink from the Silver Cup) have had their own Facebook Pages, although I haven’t posted to the Viktor Frankl page in a long time. In case you don't know, a Facebook Page is different from but connected to your personal timeline and is dedicated to the purpose of letting people know about products, concepts or services you’re offering. You can also sell from your FB Page, although I haven’t tried that. Yet. The FB instructions for setting up a Page are pretty easy to follow, so this post is about what I learned about using my Page after setting it up. If you are promoting a book or a service, there might be something useful here for you.

When you post to your Page, you get information about how many people you’ve reached. I quickly learned that if I posted first to my Page, and then shared the post to my timeline, rather than the other way around, I got more reach. I also discovered, somewhat by accident, that if I tagged people who might have a specific reason to be interested in a particular post, the post got more reach. That might seem obvious to more internet-savvy people, but it was a revelation to me, and a useful one.

Most helpful to me has been learning How, When, and What to post. A lot of it I learned from someone who was hoping I would hire him to post on my Page on my behalf. Ultimately I decided that I understood my audience(s) and the content of my book better than anyone else could, so I used his information and what I’ve gleaned along the way in order to utilize my Page to what I hope is the best advantage. Here are some tips:

        • The highest traffic is on weekday mornings,
        so it’s best to post on those 5 days.Once a day
        is enough.

        • Two out of five posts should be your own
        material or about your own material:
        Examples for me would be introducing one
        of my own blog posts, some bit of news about
        my book or events, or what someone else has
        said about my book.

        • The other three posts should be reposts
        that are in some way related to what you’re
        promoting or related to you and your
        interests. When you introduce the post, you
        can make the connection with your product
        or service or just append a link to your
        website. (A colleague told me that she found
        this strategy very effective because it wasn’t
        as if I were constantly promoting myself, but
        the material was relevant and the direction
        to my website was present but unobtrusive).

One FB page feature that I’ve committed to exploring further, especially now that my book is out, is the paid “Boost” feature. FB offers this option each time you post to your page. I used it a couple of times and definitely got wider reach, though there’s no way of knowing how that translates to actual connections beyond a quick look at a post. When I boosted I was billed more than the limit I had set, so this is one thing I need to explore further; I’ve been told that that shouldn’t happen. I could afford the amount I was billed, so it wasn’t a huge deal, but it did discourage me from using the feature. One thing I know for sure is that you shouldn’t boost something you’re reposting. You should only boost your own material.
