WHAT LEAVING THE BUILDING MEANS
If my post on Facebook about "leaving the building" seemed cryptic, it's because (and call me paranoid), I thought if I used words like "Canceling My Facebook Account" an algorithm might kick the post right into Facebook jail. Along with me. I hope that doesn't happen, as I love being in touch with you, my friends, and unless you have some other way of reaching me, my website newsletters and blog are going to be the way to see my posts and communicate from now on.
For ten years, I loved seeing what interested you, my friends on FB. I loved sharing my photos of the natural world, of curiosities, and seeing yours. I loved the humor. I loved learning things from you. I loved being back in touch with folks I'd lost contact with. I also thought FB was an essential part of getting my work out into the world. Of that I'm no longer so sure. For the past year, I've been on the site less and less for reasons that I hope will become clear. I am going to close my account in one week. For real.
WHY I'M LEAVING FACEBOOK
• FB's failure to self-monitor, especially destructive content.
• Ad after ad after ad.
• The extreme wealth FB generates for the few, who mostly seem to be lacking in conscience.
• The recent expansion to a thing called "Metaverse." I don't even want to know.
While I've been contemplating this transition, I haven't posted to my blog in a while, but that is going to change. Actually it has changed with my newest post, "Aneth." I've begun writing a new book with the working title, "In Between: An Intercultural Identity." It is a memoir about being a white missionary kid growing up in the Navajo Nation. It is about Third Culture identity and how that can play out in today's world. It explores colonization, decolonization, racism, the identity of Other, and more from a personal perspective. Some of it will be controversial. I hope all of it will be thought-provoking.
I hope the same will be true of my new blog: An ABC of Intercultural Identity. It will contain stories and mini-essays on subjects related to the new book, arranged with titles using words from A to Z, the first being the aforementioned "Aneth." Hopefully these little essays and stories will whet your appetite for the book, "In Between." A few A words that might show up, just to give you an idea:

HOW TO STAY IN TOUCH
If these stories will be of interest to you, the only way to know that they've posted (unless you maintain a blog feed) is to subscribe in the upper right corner of this page. Follow the instructions by putting your email address in the box, and go from there. Only I will ever see your address, and you can unsubscribe at any time. If you have any difficulty subscribing, use the contact tab in the website menu to let me know, and I'll give you a hand. When you subscribe, you'll get a notice with a link in your email inbox every time I post to my blog. I intend to post 2-4 times a month. This is the VERY longest newsletter I've ever sent. Normally they are only a few lines long. On the blog you are able to comment and interact with me and with other readers. I REALLY hope you will. Looking forward to seeing you here.
Peace and good will,
